Food Service Ware - Compostable Plastic - BPI Certified Products

Compostable ware - cups, plates, utensils, to-go boxes, straws, & organics liners - is labeled 'compostable' and has passed the ASTM D6400 test (products usually list this BPI certification).

Consider using reusables instead of single-use items.

Most commercial composters across California screen out (remove) and landfill compostable plastic (including BPI-Certified compostable plastic) along with other single-use plastics from food scraps and yard debris during the commercial composting process, as it's a contaminant to the finished compost applied to agricultural lands.

If your City/Hauler accepts BPI-Certified Compostable Plastics in their green/organics bin, here is where to find those food ware products: BPI-certified list

  • The BPI-Certified List also includes fiber-based food ware that is PFAS-free and accepted by commercial composting facilities.

The Center for Environmental Health's Green Screen Certified Foodware database shows products without PFOAs and other toxic chemicals. CEH’s foodware database
