Electronics - Non-working
Non-working electronics are defective or broken items with one or more circuit boards, computer chips, and/or a video display. As of Jan 1, 2026, items with embedded batteries are included as electronic device.
Consider refurbishing or repairing ewaste before recycling. Find repair information, manuals and videos through the manufacturer, YouTube, iFixit, and repair specialists. Designate a box to accumulate broken electronics over time.
A covered battery-embedded product is a product containing a battery that is not easily removable with common household tools. These products are assessed a fee at point-of-sale (SB 1215) and are now included in the Covered Electronic Waste Recycling Program in California. Find a drop-box for embedded battery products here.
The EPA recommends that businesses use third-party certified electronics recyclers (e-Stewards® and/or R2) to manage unwanted used electronics. Use links to find locations with these certifications.
