Never place a vape pen in the trash or recycling bin. Vaporizer devices or e-cigarettes may have a removable or embedded lithium battery, a chamber for tobacco or cannabis vape liquid, possible circuitry and LED display panel, and are hazardous waste under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). Batteries in vape devices are very difficult to remove and may contribute to fires in recycling and garbage waste streams and facilities. Household Hazardous Waste Facilities accept vapes with tobacco product as they are considered hazardous waste ("acute"), not cannabis product. Vape shops may offer collection bins, call ahead to confirm.

Cannabis Waste Products. Contact local dispensaries for recycling collection options of cannabis vape pens, e-cigarettes and cannabis cartridges. CalRecycle and the Department of Cannabis Control have cannabis waste regulatory information. The EPA has information on disposal for schools and small businesses. Tobacco waste products (that are not vaporizers) belong in the trash. Littered tobacco waste products are sources of environmental pollution including discharges from urban storm drains, effluents of treated wastewater, leaching of chemicals, emission of gas-phase pollutants, and bioaccumulation in biota.

If you are a business or organization with a surplus of disposable vapes, or a manufacturer, distributor, or retailer, household hazardous waste facilities will not accept commercial quantities and you will need to contract with a licensed hazardous waste disposal company that can handle the volume and comply with state and federal disposal regulations.
