Do not put sand in curbside carts as it is likely to exceed weight capacity of carts and break them. Request a C&D Debris Box (fee) for clean sand to be recycled. Clean sand is accepted at transfer stations.Sandbags that have been in contact with floodwaters and may be contaminated with sewage or septic waste, animal waste, oil and gasoline residue, lawn chemicals such as fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides, or other hazardous chemicals must be taken to a landfill. Find a nearby transfer station or landfill.
Clean sand and sandbags can be stored for reuse. Re-bag as needed and keep out them of the sun/covered. Transfer sand from deteriorated bags to a bucket then refill in burlap or sandbag for storm prep or erosion control. Share clean sand with the community through local listservs, to neighbors, Facebook Buy Nothing in your city group, NextDoor, Craigslist, or such for reuse, including for leveling pavers, tilled into soil areas to loosen packed soils to facilitate water absorption, landscape projects, or umbrella/canopy and basketball weighted bases.
